Petrus: pro and con
On the 10th of October another Fort Wine Club meeting took place in Tinto Fino restaurant, managed by sommelier Anton Panasenko. The meeting was titled "Greatest Merlot Wines" and there were five Merlots and Merlot predominant blends offered for tasting:
- Petrus 1993 - France, Bordeaux, Pomerole
- Rauzan Despagne "Girolate" 2003 - France, Bordeaux Superieur
- Le Defi de Fontenil 2005 - France, Vin de Table Francais
- Gere Attila Solus 2004 - Hungary, Villany
- Tuarita Redigaffi 2005 - Italy, Bolgheri
The idea of the event was blind tasting to let the participants objectively range the wines, guess their prices and origins, and recognize Petrus.
As a result Petrus and Girolate shared the number one position (though Girolate is 20 times cheaper than Petrus), number two went to Gere Attila Solus (which twice had been rated higher than Petrus in expert blind tastings - Wine Spectator and Austrian Wine&Co), and Tuarita Redigaffi (which more than once had been given 100 points by Robert Parker) took third place. Le Defi de Fontenil, the most expensive French table wine created by Michelle Rolland in his own winery, found itself the last in the list, nevertheless it has greatly impressed the tasters. |
