Second America discovery
In the middle of July 2008 Russia was again visited by Jose Miguel Viu, owner of the cult Chilean winery — Viu Manent. This time, besides huge cities, Jose Miguel managed to visit the world's deepest and clearest lake Baikal.
During the visit Jose Miguel in collaboration with the SibAtom retail company and the Irkutsk Wine Club conducted a tasting for restaurateurs and wine-boutique keepers in the Star Hotel restaurant.
Here are some extracts from the 'Dorogoe Udovol'stvie' Magazine article about the event written by The Wine Club President Natalia Stronenko.
About Secreto
The tasters were mostly impressed by the Secreto wines. Secreto is the Spanish for 'secret'.
Secreto line was worked out for Viu Manent's London importer, who would not except wines made of traditional Chilean varietals as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Chardonnay. So the winemakers chose Sauvignon Blanc , Viognier, Carmener, Malbec and Syrah. As Chilean Wine legislation allows the wine to be titled as a varietal if it contains minimum 75% of the varietal, for Secreto wines Viu Manent keeps the rest 25 % in secret. This is where the name of the series comes from.
The label design was worked out by the famous artist and the old friend of the Viu family Catalina Abbott. The labels for the wines of the line are different, but they all are united by 'Secret of the terroir, the grapes, the proportion and the balance' conception. The Secreto wines are made by the Chilean winemakers Juan Pablo Lecaros and Aurelio Montes, and the New Zealand winemaker Grant Phelps, under control of the Winery owner Jose Miguel Viu Bottini.
P.S. In 2007 the Secreto wines took part in the project titled 'Wine Cellar. Star Collection'. The wines with Andrey Makarevich's autographs were lifted up from the Baikal lake bottom and sold by auction. The money was given to the Irkutsk Orphans Fund. |
