For the fifth succesive year Wine Magazine readers have voted Vergelegen as the best South African Winery Wine readers rate Vergelegen tops
Which is South Africa's best winery?
This is one of the questions that Wine magazine attempts to answer in an annual reader's poll which poses 19 other tough ponderables such as whether the best closure is cork, screwcap or something else, or which wineland restaurant is best.
Somerset West estate, Vergelegen again took the top spot, being named the best winery for the fifth consecutive year.
Don Tooth, Vergelegen managing director says although at 420 the poll sample is relatively small, it is representative and importantly comprises discerning enthusiasts.
"Basically we're rated directly against our peers by very knowledgeable consumers. That's why this poll is so important to us.
"We're particularly pleased with the consistency we've shown over the past five years and that the Vergelegen V is recognised as South Africa's ultra premium red wine, with 30% of readers rating it as the wine they'd be most likely to make space for in their cellars".
In answering some of the other questions Wine's readers were overwhelmingly in favour of natural cork closures and narrowly consider the Tasting Room at Le Quartier Francais in Franschoek as the best Cape wineland restaurant.
The results of the poll appear in the June edition of Wine. |
